MoDOT: “Tie One On For Safety”

On November 22, 2017, press release, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced that the state of Missouri will “tie one on for safety” over the holidays (MoDOT promotes MADD red ribbon campaign to urge sober driving). Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has asked drivers to display red ribbons on their vehicles as a symbol of their pledge not to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

MADD’s Tie One On For Safety® campaign encourages all car owners to place a MADD red ribbon in a visible location on their vehicles to remind other drivers to designate a sober driver. Window decals, magnets, and red ribbons can be obtained at local MADD offices. You can find an office near you at https://www.madd.org/local-offices/.

MADD notes that the most dangerous driving days of the year are between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. In 2016, 891 people were killed in drunk driving accidents over the holiday season, 26 percent of traffic deaths during that time. MADD asks that you display your support for the campaign from November 1 through December 31 every year.

In the press release, MoDOT revealed plans for fleet vehicles in the state to display the MADD red ribbons. “We’re honored to join in this safety initiative,” said MoDOT Highway Safety Director Bill Whitfield. “Historically, holiday travel is a deadly time on our nation’s roadways.”

MoDOT noted that the red ribbons are intended to remind people that driving under the influence is a choice and each impaired driving accident is preventable. If you’ve had a few drinks, heed the message provided by the red ribbons and select a designated driver, use public transportation, or call a cab, Lyft, or Uber.

If you have been injured in a traffic accident, please contact SJB for a free consultation. We only receive a fee in the event of a successful resolution of your case.
