Shamberg, Johnson & Bergman, CHTD is pleased to announce that our firm will once again be sponsoring the Going the Distance for Brain Injury Run this coming Memorial Day!
Launched in 1987 by the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas (BIAKS-GKA), the Memorial Day Run was initially held in honor of Amy Thompson, an incredible young woman and brain injury survivor whose will to live gave hope to many affected by traumatic brain injuries.
In 2018, it was renamed the “Going the Distance for Brain Injury Run” and has since become a way to honor individuals affected by brain injury who exemplify the same courage and determination that Amy Thompson demonstrated. This year’s honoree is Ralph Yarl, a young man from Staley High School who suffered a serious brain injury in April 2023 when he mistakenly went to the wrong home and was shot twice through the house’s front glass door. Against all odds, and just like Amy Thompson, Ralph survived his injuries and continues to progress and persevere through lasting brain injury symptoms, including migraines, balance and focus issues, mood changes, and PTSD.
Now in its 37th year, the Memorial Day Run focuses attention on TBI survivors like Ralph and Amy and the battle against brain injuries. Drawing more than a thousand participants, it also serves as an important fundraiser to help the BIAKS-GS continue its mission to provide important services and programs for individuals and families affected by brain injury.
